Remer has a diverse occupational history. Prior to college graduation, Remer earned the rank of E-5 in 3 years in the Army as a combat medic and psychiatric technician. He also served as a platoon sergeant pushing troops through Advanced Individual Training. Prior to the Army (72-75), Remer worked as a security guard, stage hand, actor, telephone cable splicer, heat furnace operator, and night auditor for a hotel. After the service, but before college, he worked as a gymnastics coach, and counselor for a half-way house for federal prisoners. After obtaining his degree, Remer worked as a managing director for a college performing & visual arts department, executive director of an arts council, and claims adjuster for an insurance company.
Remer has volunteered much of his time since his daughter was born as president of a homeowner's association, web site builder, programmer, political writer and analyst, and managing editor of a political debate web site. His latest volunteer effort since 2006 has been as founder and president of a political action committee named, Vote Out Incumbents for Democracy, or VOID, for short.
In his spare time, Mr. Remer with the help of his wife and daughter, bought five acres and built their own 2 story home entirely on their own, with no contractors save for septic tank installation. According to Mr. Remer, his greatest achievement was becoming a loving husband and proud father.
